One step closer to identifying and treating depression. A gene has been found that affects the uptake of serotonin, a neurotransmitter known to affect mood. Michael Kaplitt from the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York has been working on this gene and has been able to deomstrate the effect in mice that are lacking the gene.
"A gene called p11 is vital for enabling neurons to respond to the neurotransmitter serotonin. A lack of p11 has been shown to lead to depression in humans."
