The Internet Keepers - DNSSEC Recovery
Cyber-Guardians – Web – Technology | Popular Science.
From Popular Science we find that 7 people have been entrusted with special internet keys. These keys hold special secure DNS data that will help rebuild the internet (specifically it's DNS records) in the case of a huge disaster.
Huge you say? how huge?
Well...the internet works becuase it's decentralised and is not just one network but a bunch of networks joined together. There is however some special considerations, these being the central records of IP addresses and DNS entires including Domain records of who owns what and where should it point to.
The primary DNS records of all servers that either contain records or have pointers to records are called Root servers. Without these servers we would not be able to resolve TLD's (Top Level Domains i.e. .com .net etc).
So this is where the gaurdians step in, if for some reason these root servers are lost and the central registrar had nowhere to look up information then these special keys could rebuild that index.
I want one just so i can say "I have the internet in my pocket" lol

Makes for an interesting read, I know i will be giving this a further read ASAP.

Telstra fined $18.5m for anti-competitive behaviour - ABC News Australian Broadcasting Corporation
Telstra fined $18.5m for anti-competitive behaviour - ABC News Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
As you can see by the link above, Telstra (finally) have been held accountable for thier behaviour.
It's about time they were told and paid for not allowing proper access to exchanges.
In my opinion the best thing that can happen is the NBN to kill the need for copper or for Telstra to go belly up and free up the "Public Infrastructure" for the public (via private Telco's) to get back full and fair access to our copper and exchanges.
This all may be a non issue once NBN and other technoogies such at LTE are in full operation but for now it is a major concern. It's also one of the main reasons Australia is so behind in it's broadband access and pays so much for it.
The near future will be very interesting, perhaps one day, maybe even soon, we will get access to good value, high speed data access.

Silicon Photonics Research - Intel's 50G data link technology
Silicon Photonics Research.
The above articles explains a new technology Intel are working on that achieves 50Gbit transfers via silicon photonics.
Basically the transmitter chip has the ability to establish 4 12.5Gbps links via a laser.
Currently industry standard is up to 10Gbps and uses copper or optic fibre to transmit the data.
Seems like an interesting field of research, and knowing Intel it'll no doubt result in something worth checking out.

This must be the most simple, effective and great idea's i have seen for a mobile phone holder.
I am forever asking myself why i don;t have a desk stand, why i am in a plane holding my phone as i watch movies.
Well this seems to resolve it, i'll be ordering mine today, look for a proper review once it arrives.

HP Slate - Still want an iPad?
So you want an iPAD?
Well did you realise that you have some real choice when looking at portable devices.
There are three main types:
1. Mini-PC/Tablet PC - These are usually more minaturised pc's than anything else, running windows xp or windows 7. They have the most processing power and most compatible with applications (ie. windows applications).
2. Pad - Mostly these ar ebased on mobile processors like the Intel ATOM. Special low power processors designed for this application, as a result they run a little slower than a CPU from a normal PC with similar clock speeds.
These devices run anything from a custom linux, Android or in the iPad case iOS.
These devices are more ruggedised and tuned for good battery life.
Depending on the OS you will have either Linux applications, Android Marketplace or App Store Apps.
3. eReaders - very light, usually black and white and will only read books (or in some cases play mp3's and display images).
Where does the HP Slate come in? well it's a pad. Based on the Intel Atom cpu and with reasonable performance specs it actually runs windows 7. Your getting a pad or tablet device that runs all the same stuff as your PC at home. A world of applications are available to you but in a nice portable device.
Check the link for more info,
XB830PA.
What other choices do i have?
Well ASUS are working on some eeePC's as well as the Joojoo and other tablets or pad's that have been reported to be in development like the Cisco Android App and the Nokia tablet running WebOS

High Tech Dirt - Physics engine delivers digital dirt.
Lagoa Multiphysics 1.0 - Teaser from Thiago Costa on Vimeo.
Via Gizmodo...Lagoa Physics Engine.
What is this? All games and digital environemtns that try to emulate real life have aphysics engine. There are usually only a couple of hand full of physics engines used among game developers. In the past the Havock Physics engine has performed well and the Euphoria physics engine has riegned supreme. (GTA IV was based on Euphrois).
There seems to be someone always working on new physics and this is another. The realistic behaviour of this demo is quite amazing; I for one will be keeping an eye on this.

Google Image Search - New and Improved
Well..this is interesting!
Go to google, do an image search, now, what kind of image are you looking for, what size and with what subject?
Well now on the left hand side of a google image search you have options such as these. The one that impresses me the most is the colour picker, choose which colour you want in your image and press it, viola, just like magic you see all of the images with that colour in it.
This to me is quite handy, especially when searching for stock.
go check it out for yourself at www.google.com

Apple faces music on iPhone flaw but recall unlikely | Reuters
Apple faces music on iPhone flaw but recall unlikely | Reuters.
So....finally we see that Apple being a very immature phone developer have dropped the ball. This for me was totally expected, makes me laugh actually.
iPhone, iPad, iPod, they are all just marketing gimmicks with some nice design. The actuality of it all is that these are new to the market and there are many many choices for devices that hold as much music, look as good, have longer battery lives and more features but because Apple are so good at marketing and for the most part everyone else is so bad, we have bad technology winning out over good.
Why? because sheep like to follow the pack, be told what is good rather than try something new and assess for themselves.
My advice, take time to research technology, ask someone unbiased in the industry. There is so much great technology out there in the world these days, take the time to find it and you'll be pleasently surprised.

Optus Promises LTE, But Not For A While | Gizmodo Australia
Optus Promises LTE, But Not For A While | Gizmodo Australia.
A win for mobile technology. I was really worried that LTE may not make it here and we'd be stuck with WiMAX devices.
Both Telstra and Optus look to be testing LTE with the article quoting "43 megabits per second" on the first test demonstration.
Current networks quote up to 7 megabits ot Telstra even up to 20, however real world figures are more like 300-1500 kilobits per second.
Watch out for these networks and LTE based devices soon.
What makes LTE so good? it uses MIMO type technology, that multi in multi out to accept signal from more than one tower at a time allowing for better signal and higher throughput.
It also uses smarts to bounce signals of buildings to find a path to another tower. In my opinion a very cool technology and i for one am happy to see the major telco's embracing LTE rather than WiMAX. Only big hold up is the slow release of the analogue tv band, the staggered switch off will take more time to free up the frequency for use with LTE.
