The above articles explains a new technology Intel are working on that achieves 50Gbit transfers via silicon photonics.
Basically the transmitter chip has the ability to establish 4 12.5Gbps links via a laser.
Currently industry standard is up to 10Gbps and uses copper or optic fibre to transmit the data.
Seems like an interesting field of research, and knowing Intel it'll no doubt result in something worth checking out.
